Information on. Herter Bros.
from page 2 Herter Bros were the best interior designers, decorators & furniture makers in NYC in the last half of the 19th C. Gustav and Christian Herter, German Immigrants, started the company in 1860 selling to the then 60 wealthiest NYC families in the world with the advent of the Industrial Revolution. The Herter Bros eventually reached out to the very wealthy all across the nation. William Vanderbilt, son of Cornelius Vanderbilt, the wealthiest man in the United States in the last half of the19th century, built the largest & most expensive home in America at the time on 5th Ave. in NYC. They chose Herter Bros. to design, decorate & fully furnish this home propelling the Herter Bros firm. to the forefront catering to the wealthy . No one before or since has done more to shape the taste of the truly wealthy, yet Herter Bros. remains little known today to the general public. Herter Bros. success was not just in being furniture makers, they could also design, decorate and furnish complete homes of the wealthy using fine artistry and innovative design. Herter Bros .also used luxurious materials that would help increase their fame. After the Civil War many firms were on a vision quest and Herter Bros. looked to Europe and its past for uncompromising quality, impeccable craftsmanship and the ability to identify the best of many cultures to set their firm apart from others. The Aesthetic Movement as well as other trends that followed owe a great deal to the earlier Herter Bros. Herter Bros. furniture prices today are near the top of all historical furnishings in the United States. A single chair can cost several thousand dollars, some have recently brought $75,000 each (Sotheby's). It also appears today that a few individuals are now embarking on a new vision quest.
