Chautauqua Lake Erie Wine Trail

Through the efforts of the National Historic Trust, the State Preservation Offices in Albany and the Landmark Society of Chautauqua County, Western New York we were able to save and move a nationally important historic home designed by the famous architect, George Barber. The Captain Storm House was moved in 2000 to Candlelight Lodge bed and breakfast property, two landscaped acres in the heart of the village of Westfield, New York. The Captain Storm House B&B allows you to walk to the Village Park, antique shops, restaurants, stores, and gift shops. Within one block find convenience stores, banks, a full service grocery store, medical center, post office and pharmacy for your additional needs. Our two Chautauqua Inns are the only Westfield, New York B&B's in the village. Five miles south is Chautauqua Lake and Mayville NY. The Captain Storm House, a Chautauqua bed and breakfast is 15 minutes from Chautauqua Institution and Chautauqua, New York. One mile North from our B&B is Lake Erie, Barcelona Harbor and Pier and the oldest gas Light House on the Great Lakes.

The Captain Storm House is a large brick  Queen Anne revival home built in 1892 by a northwest coast retired sea captain who enjoyed both Lake Erie and Chautauqua Lake New York. Our Chautauqua B&B is not only important from the outside with its unusual architecture, sweeping porches and detailed appointments, but also has a wonderful interior. The Captain Storm House has paneled walls, coffered ceilings, carved fireplaces and pocket doors, with each of the main rooms of the Inn displaying a different light figured wood - curly cherry, sycamore, quartered oak, chestnut, figured maple and heart of pine.

The Captain Storm House, a Lake Chautauqua bed and breakfast, has four large suites, not rooms each with queen size beds, sitting areas, and Kohler garden tub and showers - we use no wide angle photography. The Captain Storm Suite features a large double Kohler Whirlpool and shower (175 sq. ft. bath). All rooms in the Inn are spaciously furnished with many elegant late 19th century/ early 20th century antiques - Victorian, Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts and Oriental.   Guests of the Inn may use the large country fully equipped kitchen, formal dining room, library and two parlors. The 75 foot sweeping wrap around front porch and private back porch are perfect for enjoying the early mornings and late evenings. Notice a picture of the Inn moving down Main Street from two blocks further West in 2000.

Westfield Memorial Hospital is one block away and the Westfield Family Physician's Center is just across the street from our B&B. The McClurg County Museum and Patterson Library are two blocks away with self-guided walking tours of Westfield's historic architecture.  The Captain Storm House is also1 mile from the new New York State Wine Museum, " Grape Discovery Center." Six wineries with wine tasting are within four miles. The Captain Storm House is in the absolute center of  the Chautauqua Lake Erie Wine Trail (40  miles). All 24 wineries are within 20 miles of the Captain Storm House in Lake Erie Wine Country.

There is locally Cross Roads (4 mi,), a Farm and Craft Market on weekends. There is a Farmers Market in the Village Park, two blocks away on Saturdays during the summer. There are also bike trails and hiking along nearby Chautauqua Gorge, and several nearby scenic golf courses, all for your outdoor enjoyment. Many special events such as the Westfield Arts and Crafts Festival, the Westfield Antique Show and  the Art Trail Open Studio Tour occur in July. Many Winery Holiday Wine Weekends - Romantic Wine and Chocolate and the Wine and Cheese weekends take place throughout the year. There are art galleries, pottery shops and Amish shopping within a few miles. www.ChautauquaArtTrail.com

Tour the area along Lake Erie, Barcelona Harbor and Pier and see the oldest gas Lighthouse on the Great Lakes. Barcelona is one mile from the Captain Storm House and is Westfield's best kept secret. The area has a New England charm which many painters have tried to capture. Experience a fishing charter, boating or dive on a Lake Erie shipwreck. Smoked whitefish, salmon, shrimp and fresh perch, pike and trout are also available at Westfield Fisheries. As the only safe harbor on Lake Erie for many miles Barcelona is one of the principle reasons for the large number of wonderful 19th century homes in Westfield. Successful 19th century businessmen needed supplies and built themselves grand homes from also selling many of these supplies to other businesses in nearby Jamestown, at the time, the major manufacturer of furniture in the nation. Westfield, New York is also the original home of Welch's Grape Juice.

Travel around Lake Chautauqua New York, less than five miles away. Take a dinner cruise on Lake Chautauqua or enjoy a balloon ride over Chautauqua Lake. There is skiing in the winter at nearby Peek'n Peak or Cockaigne, 30 minutes away. From our bed and breakfast Chautauqua Institution is only 15 minutes away. Chautauqua Institution is known around the world for its summer cultural programs with concerts, lectures and famous entertainers. In nearby Fredonia NY (16 mi.) is SUNY at Fredonia and the Fredonia Opera House. Jamestown NY (25 mi.) has the Lucy-Desi Museum and the Roger Tory Peterson Institute and Audubon Nature Center and Sanctuary.  Lastly, there is Lily Dale on Cassadaga Lake (20 mi), the largest group of mediums and spiritualists in the country which have gained national prominence on HBO over the last 2 years.

Individual rooms at the Captain Storm House B&B usually require a two night minimum for accommodations. A special vacation rental price also allows two to four couples the entire Country Inn for a private vacation getaway.
