The Captain Storm House is a large brick Queen Anne revival home built in 1892 by a northwest coast retired sea captain who enjoyed both Lake Erie and Chautauqua Lake New York. Our Chautauqua B&B is not only architecturally important from the outside with its unusual roof line, sweeping porches and detailed appointments, but also has a wonderful interior. The Captain Storm House has paneled walls coffered ceilings, carved fireplaces and pocket doors, with each of the main rooms of the Inn displaying a different light figured wood - curly cherry, sycamore, quartered oak, chestnut, figured maple and heart of pine.
The Captain Storm House, a Lake Chautauqua bed and breakfast, has four large suites not rooms each with queen size beds and Kohler garden tub and showers. The Captain Storm Suite features a large double Kohler Whirlpool and shower (175 sq. ft. bath). All rooms at the Inn offer lodging that is spacious and furnished with the many elegant late 19th century/ early 20th century antiques - Arts and Craft, Chinese, Art Nouveau and Formal. Guests of the Inn may use the large country kitchen, formal dining room, library and two parlors. The 75 foot sweeping wrap around front porch and private back porch are perfect for enjoying the outdoors and early evening. Westfield Memorial Hospital is one block away and the McClurg County Museum is two blocks with self-guided walking tours of Westfield's historic architecture. Seven antique shops and five wineries with wine tasting are within four miles along the Chautauqua Lake Erie Wine Trail (30 miles). The Captain Storm House is located in the absolute center of wine country - there are 21 wineries within 15 miles of our Country Inn. Several New York fine dining restaurants are also within a few miles of our B&B. There is also Cross Roads Farm and Craft Market in Westfield on Saturdays with nearby Amish shops. Locally there are several bike trails, hiking along Chautauqua Gorge, and several scenic golf courses, all for you to pick from. Many special events such as the Westfield Arts and Crafts Festival in July and the wineries' Holiday Wine Weekends - Romantic Wine and Chocolate and Wine and Cheese weekends take place throughout the year. Lastly there are art galleries and pottery shops within a few miles.
There is an evening dinner cruise on Chautauqua Lake or a balloon ride over Lake Chautauqua. In the winter there is skiing at Holiday Valley, Cockaigne or Peek'n Peak, less than 30 minutes away. Our Chautauqua bed and breakfast, is near Chautauqua Institution, only 15 minutes away. Chautauqua Institution is known around the world for its summer cultural programs with concerts, lectures and famous entertainers. In nearby Fredonia NY is SUNY at Fredonia and the Fredonia Opera House. Jamestown NY has the Lucy-Desi Museum and the Roger Tory Peterson Institute and Audubon Nature Center and Sanctuary.
On Lake Erie one mile away, is Barcelona Harbor, Pier and early Lighthouse with fishing charters, diving on Lake Erie shipwrecks and. boating. Barcelona is Westfield's best kept secret, picturesque New England charm which many painters have tried to capture. Barcelona Harbor is the only safe harbor on Lake Erie between Erie and Fredonia and is one of the main reasons for the early 19th century homes in Westfield and Jamestown. Successful early businessmen needed supplies and built themselves grand homes.
